Designers and researchers have developed a new scarf that is disrupting the textile industry.

Sonia Reynolds invented “space cloth”, the first nonwoven material made from yarn. This smart textile uses its unique structure to wrap copper wires, LEDs, etc. Ms Reynolds took the idea to Nottingham Trent University’s Advanced Textiles Research Group, which is developing further research into the new manufacturing process, led by Professor Tilak Dias and Dr Amanda Briggs Goode in the School of Art and Design.

The scientific name of the new manufacturing process is zephlinear. It is different from traditional woven or knitted materials. It is woven by a new technology, which means “yarn surface entanglement”.

Ms Reynolds said: “This is a real breakthrough for the textile industry. It’s the first non-woven material made from yarn and it shows great promise. The linear channels of the yarn give it huge potential for smart textiles. It is particularly suitable for being embedded in microcapsules containing drugs or scents, delivering medicine to specific parts of the body or creating antibacterial, scented clothing. Because of the material’s distinctive visual effect, it has the potential to be used in other applications, such as wall coverings. . Because it requires less labor than traditional fabrics, it is an environmentally friendly production material.”

Zephlinear is a combination of two words: zephyr (light fabric) and linear (linear). It is called ‘space cloth’ because of its appearance and textile properties. The material is patent-pending and will be showcased at the Wearable Technology Show in the near future. Research shows that the yarns in this new textile are all natural, such as pure wool, hair, and wool/silk blends.

Professor Dias, from the Advanced Textiles Research Group, said: “zephlinear is being developed at an amazing pace with remarkable results. We believe it has great potential in textiles and we have already found that it can be combined with electronic textile technologies such as heating textiles or embedding LED textiles. The fabric is lightweight and flexible and can be retracted to its original shape. We are very much looking forward to further developing these materials, and we believe it will provide people with smarter and more environmentally friendly clothing in the future.”
