Thermal fiber selam

The beginning of winter has just passed, and the temperature in various places is slowly dropping, and thermal underwear has begun to usher in its hot-selling period.

All kinds of thermal underwear have been put on the shelves. Because the competition is too fierce, thermal underwear has used high technology in terms of materials: “Platinum Velvet”, “Selam”, “Charcoal Card”, “Helika” and so on. The lofty name confuses many consumers.

Today we will mainly understand what selam is.

❂Selam

The English name CERAM is a patented product of Toyobo Japan and a registered trademark of Toyobo EXLAN Fiber Division. It is a far-infrared emitting acrylic fiber developed by Toyobo Japan.

Principle of heating

Selam uses advanced jet technology to add far-infrared emitting ceramics to the spinning solution to obtain acrylic fibers with far-infrared emitting properties.

Far infrared rays are invisible rays that can heat objects. During the heat loss process from the surface of human skin, a large amount of far-infrared rays will be radiated to the outside world. However, in a cold environment, these infrared rays radiated by the human body are lost in vain.

Toyobo’s patented product Seram can reflect back the far-infrared rays radiated by the human body, making full use of the heat radiated by the human body to keep warm in cold environments.

It can be seen from the above sentence that selam can use the heat released by the human body to store and conduct it to achieve the insulation effect. It is not that the material itself can generate heat. Therefore, the “heating fiber” appearing in the advertisement is incorrect.

The difference between thermal underwear fabrics

The main differences are selam, meyabi and outlast fibers.

Selam and Meiyabi are both acrylic fibers. They are different from ordinary acrylic fibers and are differentiated acrylic fibers. Acrylic fiber, also known as artificial wool, is fluffy, elastic and has good warmth retention. The disadvantage is that it is prone to pilling.

Meiyabi is actually a kind of ultra-fine denier acrylic fiber with good anti-pilling properties. Its main features are anti-pilling and ultra-fine denier, as well as the officially promoted anti-static. In practical applications, Mayabi and viscose are blended together and then made into clothes. After the viscose absorbs moisture, the chemical bonds are broken and heat is released. Meiyabi plays the role of preventing heat loss, which is called hygroscopic heating.

The principle of selam keeping warm has been mentioned above.

Outlast is a phase change material made into microcapsules and added to the fiber. Phase change materials absorb heat and change from solid to liquid, storing energy. When the external temperature becomes low, they change from liquid to solid and release energy. This is not simply to keep warm, but to balance temperature changes. This is a material used in space suits and later used by civilians. When a space suit is used in an environment with a very large temperature difference, the effect will be obvious. Ordinary clothing will not have such a large temperature difference, so the effect will be the same. Not to mention that this thing is very troublesome to produce, and if the capsule is damaged, the performance will be reduced.

To sum up, the thermal insulation effect of Meiyabi and Seram should be equivalent, and should be better than Outlast. What I say is quite referring to the experience effect, not the test effect. In fact, the warmth retention rate is highly related to the thickness of the fabric. Wearing a down jacket is more useful than anything else.
