Imagine that jeans and socks can decontaminate and deodorize themselves when hung in the sun. What a joy it is. Scientists from Donghua University in Shanghai have developed a new type of cotton fabric that can self-decontaminate and deodorize when in “intimate contact” with sunlight, and this property remains intact even after washing and drying. Scientists say that in the future, jeans, socks, etc. will only need to be exposed to sunlight to return to new condition.

Scientists pointed out in the article that what is special about the new cotton fabric is the nanoparticle coating composed of titanium dioxide and nitrogen. The titanium dioxide and nitrogen coating breaks down stains on the fabric and removes odors whenever exposed to sunlight.

In fact, scientists have previously developed fabrics that can also clean themselves under light, but that fabric can only complete its self-cleaning work under direct ultraviolet rays. Scientists have long hoped to create a fabric that can initiate a self-cleaning reaction when exposed to weak sunlight.

“We are developing a new fabric that can self-clean and remove stains and bacteria when exposed to ordinary sunlight.” The researchers pointed out that the white color used in this fabric can be removed when exposed to certain lights. Titanium dioxide can break down dirt and kill microorganisms. Therefore, titanium dioxide is also widely used in white paint, food and women’s sunscreen, and is used to make self-cleaning coatings, windows and tiles.

Research results show that orange juice stains sprinkled on this new fabric can be effectively removed under sunlight. The study also found that adding nanoparticles composed of silver and iodine to new fabrics speeds up the stain removal process.
