Researchers from South Korea and Australia say there will be soft and durable rechargeable clothes in the future. It can charge wearable devices by collecting static electricity caused by human activity.
Wearable devices that consume very quickly, such as the Apple Watch, will gradually emerge in the future, but batteries make these novel gadgets extremely limited. Although bendable, stretchable batteries can get rid of the constraints of battery shape, battery power and service life have not been solved.
The newly developed energy clothing, according to researchers, uses a natural phenomenon called triboelectricity. When two objects rub against each other quickly, one object will steal electrons from the surface of the other. This is why static electricity is generated when walking on a street stall.
This soft and foldable power-generating material is composed of two kinds of fabrics, the first is silver-plated on the surface, and the second is composed of silicone rubber, zinc oxide nanorods and silver.
When the researchers stacked four pieces of cloth and rubbed them quickly, the voltage instantly rose to 170 volts, while the current reached an average of 120 microamps, and the high power reached about 1.1 kilowatts. The garment is extremely durable, as it takes 12,000 compression-release cycles to generate electricity.
